History[]
Background[]
Following the independence of the Duchy of Burgundy from France granted in 1420 by the Treaty of Troyes, Savoy became a dispute between the Duchy of Savoy and Burgundy. After the death of Charles the Bold - the last prince of Burgundy - in 1477, Savoyard forces seized the County of Mâcon. Burgundian lands, including Mâcon, were legally inherited by the Habsburgs and annexed into the Holy Roman Empire. Savoyard annexation of Mâcon was considered an aggression against the HRE, from which the nation withdrew few years before.
Roman-Savoyard War[]
Under the pressure of Roman electors, threatening Austrian domination in the Holy Roman Empire, Frederick III declared war on Savoy in 1481. Tough Alpine terrain and local resistance in Switzerland made the war highly exhausting and prolonged. Philip II escaped the capital city of Chambèri at night, on February 15th, 1495. He was heading to Turin, but went missing before reaching Montmélian. Loss of king and unevitable fall of Chambèri pushed Savoy to capitulate.
The nation was divided between the independent Duchy of Piedmont under the former Duke of Savoy, and the Duchy of Savoy, later incorporated directly into Austria.
Old Swiss Confederacy[]
The Austrian occupation of Savoy encountered fierce resistance from local French-speaking population. The royal court in Vienna found it unprofittable to directly hold the exclaved provinces. Some land in the north was given to a local bishop, creating the Prince-Bishopric of Chablais in 1533. Soon after, after the death of Emperor Charles V, Savoy was restored as an independent duchy under his son - John.
The Duke died unexpectedly in 1578, at the age of 31, leaving no legal heir. On December 12th, local Savoyard population proclaimed an independent republic in Annecy (Ènneci). It was, however, recognized as unlawful by the monarchs of France and Austria, both seeking to reclaim the area. A Savoyard delegation was sent to Bern, in order to discuss possible alliance with the Swiss. Both Savoy and Chablais have gained the status of Swiss associate states.
Geography[]
Aronia is situated in Western Europe, in the Alpine region, just to the east of Massif Central. It lies between latitudes 45° and 47° N, and longitudes 5° and 8° E. The country is mostly influenced by the Alpine climate, with addition of both Marine West Coast and Mediterranean climates.
The longest river is the Rhône, shared with France and Switzerland. The largest lake is Lake Geneva, also known as Lac Léman.
