History
Rome and Germanics (2000 BCE to 900 CE)
The first people to inhabit Belgium were the Celtic Tribes. However, the Germanic tribes from Denmark and Sweden invaded, and became the primary culture and people. Around 5 CE, the Romans conquered Belgium. When Rome collapsed in 476, the Frankish Tribe settled in Belgium. The Franks formed a huge empire, but split into three nations after a while. Belgium was part Central Francia, but was soon split between East Francia and West Francia. East Francia became the Holy Roman Empire and West Francia became France.
Holy Roman Empire (900 to 1792)
Belgium remained split between the HRE and France for 500 years. Then the kingdom of Burgundy took Belgium. However, the king died with no heir and the kingdom split apart, with Austria getting all of Belgium. After Austria and Spain lost a union with each other, Belgium was given to Spain. Around 1700 thought, Austria gained it back.
France and Holland (1792 to 1914)
In 1792, Austria declared war on France and the French invaded and occupied Belgium. This would last until 1813. After the Congress of Vienna, Belgium was under the rule of the Kingdom of the Netherlands. In the 1830s, Belgium declared independence .at the Congress of Berlin, Belgium gained the colony of Zaire, the Congo today.
World Wars (1914 to Today)
Belgium was invaded by Germany during WWI, and joined the Allies which UK has protected Belgium, they declared war against Germany. After the war, it gained small border territories near Germany. It was again invaded by Germany in 1940 and liberated in 1944. Belgium was one of the founding members of the EU. Zaire did gain independence as the Democratic Republic of the Congo. Belgium is also part of NATO and the EU.
