Brazil

Brazil is a country in South America. Is the biggest country in Latin America and the only Portuguese-Speaker in this continent. It has the 5th biggest population and area in the world, the 7th biggest GDP and the current HDI is 0.744, always oscillating between medium and high rank.

Colonization[]

Brazilian colonization started in 1500, when a Portuguese fleet during the Great Navigation arrived in an unknown land, where they called Vera Cruz Island (because they thought it was an island at first) and founded the first city and capital of Brazil, Salvador. The name changed to Vera Cruz Land and then to Brazil because of the Brazil wood, which was very valued in Europe and was quickly explored and almost extincted.

With the competition for the New World between Portugal and Spain, Tordesilhas Treaty was signed dividing the continent. The colony was divided in 15 hereditary captaincies, which failed. They fought against dutch and french colonies in northeast and in Rio de Janeiro. Portugal, out of the union with Spain, started to expand to west, ignoring Tordesilhas Treaty. They contracted Bandeirantes, in expeditions to explore the west. They expanded a lot the colony, and the borders were almost the actual ones.

Napoleonic Wars[]

When France threatened an invasion to Portugal, the royal family went to Brazil, changed the capital of the empire to Rio de Janeiro and turned the colony in Portugal, "developing" it. When the wars ended, they established the United Kingdom of Portugal, Brazil and Algarves. However, the portuguese people wanted the royal family back. At 1820, the royal family went to Portugal, and left the prince Dom Pedro I as prince regent of the Kingdom of Brazil.

Portugal tried to turn Brazil in a colony again calling Dom Pedro I back, but he refused. When an ultimatum was sent to he leave Brazil, he declared independence at September 7th, 1822. USA was the first to recognize. After a war of independence, Portugal recognized them under some conditions, including a high idenization, creating the first Brazilian debts with England.

Empire[]

Dom Pedro I became the first emperor of Brazil, ruling from 1822 to 1831. He mad the first constitution of Brazil, which added 4 government branches: Executive, Legislative, Judiciary and Moderator (gives the emperor the power to interfere where he want). The last one turned Brazil in a hidden absolutist monarchy. They didn't want to turn the country into a republic because the elite was in the power, and they were fearing that what happened in France happened with them.
