Postmortem

It’s 1400, 50 years after the darkest days of Europe, but one thing has changed, dramatically. The Black Death that killed 1/3rd of the European population and 75-200 million people globally, was worse. The plague spread from Crimea to ports all around the Mediterranean, and in just 8 years killed over 90% of all Europeans. The HRE, Byzantine empire, Hungary and more, all collapsed under the mass culling of the bubonic plague. Cities like Paris, London, Rome, Konstantinople burned to the ground in attempts to kill the plague. Southern Europe became devoid of life, and mere pockets of survivors were left across the northern parts of Europe, leaving the continent open for invaders. A handful of European nations survived by becoming isolationist. The Middle East and North Africa were less affected by the monstrous pandemic, as they closed their borders much sooner and more strictly. The old world is in chaos, Christianity and the Europeans are on the brink of extinction, how will you shape this dead continent? How will you seed the foundation of the future? Welcome, to Post Mortem: Europa

After the death of Batu Khan (the founder of the Golden Horde) in 1255, his dynasty flourished for a full century, until 1359, though the intrigues of Nogai did instigate a partial civil war in the late 1290s. The Horde's military power peaked during the reign of Uzbeg (1312–1341), who adopted Islam. The territory of the Golden Horde at its peak included most of Eastern Europe from the Urals to the Danube River, and extended east deep into Siberia. However, when the Great Death struck, a rift occured between the two kingdoms. What was once a clotsely knit relationship broke away, as the Prince of Wales died. Therefore to avoid that ever happening, we have decided to start a agriculture program and get our food production back up to standard.
    • Act 1:2 - The Mass Education Act: The Great Death led to wales becoming a republic and valuing the people's views. There is one issue with this: The People aren't well educated. To nullify this issue, we have installed a mass education system, with schools popping up everywhere.

These people are culturally Welsh, and Religiously similiar. Therefore, with news of a new nation, we hope they join the nation. They are provided with autonomy. The settlements are small so they should not have any military. We hope that the sheer fact that we have sent troops at them intimidates them into joining our nation.
    • Gloucester Integration: A Battlion of Swordsmen, accompanied by a squadron of archers and 3 reconnaisance troops of cavalry move towards Glouchestershire, just South East of Wales. They are joined by 3 groups of 1000 civillians and supplies. Each Group is to establish a new, well-designed, well-planned settlement, while the Armed Forces are to establish a military base in the region, in between all 3 settlements. Each Group is given 6 wagons. 1 wagon of tools which include axes, hoes and sickles. 2 wagons stores a load livestock, typically many sheeps, and a few cows, but could include chickens. The other 3 wagons have supplies to build with and seeds. These are the essentials given to each group, but trade is done regularly and more supplies are traded around. Cumbria-Northumberland War: Cumbria declares war on Northumberland without a casus belli and a large portion of Northumberland's land is ceded to Cumbria. This causes other nations to form an Anti-Cumbria coalition.

War of the Roses: The two duchies of Lancaster and York, representing the house of Lancaster and York respectively, after much strife, decide to go to war over English supremacy.

Papacy of Krakow: The Papacy is reestablised in Krakow, the capital of Poland, and receive much recognition as the legitimate successor of the old Roman Papacy.

Cyprus: Under Mamluk intimidation, they seek protection from the Ilkhanate.

Ilkhanate: Border friction between them and the Mamluks have left their relations sour, and they do not respond to the latter's non-agression pact request.

Swedish expedition of Östergötland: The expedition is attacked by mass packs of wolves and die.

Norway: Their expansions see limited success.

Ösel-Wiek: The duchy of Ösel-Wiek sets up to colonise the Estonian coast and the northern tip of Gotland.

Georgia: They come to Trebizond and Rum, asking for assistance against the invading Golden Horde.

Novgorod: The city of Neva, once devastated by the plague, is now a flourishing trading port in the Baltic once again. Without Muscovy, they are free to expand southwards.

Cumbria: They establish an alliance with Wales.

Leinster and Scotland: They agree to a trade agreement with Wales due to their close proximity.

Wales: The Reunion was a success, however the expedition to Glouchestershire is… well, not so much.

      • Poznan: 5 000
      • Lwow: 5 000

    • none for now
  • Events:
    • Expansion: Our scouts are exploring lands with no government in West Pomerania and North Slovakia and brings some information about them. Then, 2000 spearmen, 400 crossbowmen, 2000 archers, 1500 swordsmen and 500 light cavalry form an expansion group and split into two: Północ (in West Pomerania) and Południe (in North Slovakia). 'Północ' moves to area around present Szczecin and 'Południe' moves to West Carpathian mountains in present regions of Prešov and Žilina.
    • Pope's autonomy: King Władysław II Jagiełło gave some areas south and west from Krakow under autonomous rule of Pope as successor of former Italian Papal States.

Kingdom of Sweden[]

  • Government: Hereditary Monarchy
    • Queen: Freya Karina of Västerås
    • Laws:
      • Agricultural Passing: It is declared that all lands within the Swedish realm ripe for agriculture are to be distributed equally among the populace, as the lands are empty and have begun to be taken by the undergrowth.
      • Pagan Jizya-Hedniskatt: A law has been enacted that has similar features to the Jizya taxes of Muslim countries, called Hedniskatt (Hednisk skatt combined). This law allows pagans to openly practice their religion without persecution, all the while having to pay an extra tax called Hedniskatt to the government. On preaching and conversion however, there remains a grey area.
  • Economy: Mostly based on agriculture, furs, etc.
  • Capital: Uppsala
  • Demographics:
    • Population: 797,970
      • Uppsala: 57,822
      • Stockholm: 46,983
      • Västerås: 28,611
      • Turku: 26,263
      • Viipuri: 23,845
    • Peasants: Nearly 91%
    • Religion: Catholicism, under the Church of Sweden: 95%; Catholicism, under other: 2%; Other religions: 3%
  • Wars and Conflicts: N/A

    • Spearmen: 9,905
    • Swordsman: 12,950
    • Bowmen: 10,875
    • Arsonists: 3,700
    • Cavalry: 525
  • Diplomacy:
    • Norway: It seems that the Lord has punished us for trying to venture into the nature for which he has designated for his other creations. Perhaps a joint expedition into the wilderness between our lands and around Røros will be much more fruitful, no Norway? If we are to o on with such an expedition however, let it wait a decade or two, for it is clear that we must develop and recover rather than expand and conquer at the current [moment].
  • Events:
    • Östergötland Tragedy: In the middle of the Östergötland Expedition, massive packs of wolves kill off 55% of the colonists, army-men, and cavalry, allowing only 2430 to return to the Kingdom of Sweden alive. Many in the country protest the Expedition for its failures and high fatality rate. This tragedy may prompt a future governmental change in the country.
    • Rural Growth: In all major cities and towns except Viipuri and Stockholm, a portion of the population leaves for the free farmland in the Agricultural Passing Law. Stockholm and Viipuri are the only cities to grow because of a surge in port, trade, and naval growth.
    • Development: A lesson is learned from the Östergötland Tragedy, in which it is advised to develop and recover the cities, lands, and infrastructure of the realm rather than venture out and get killed. Three forts are constructed in Örebro, Porvoo, and a recently chartered city called Gävle, while fortifications are established in all major cities plus these fort cities.

Königreich Böhmen (Kingdom of Bohemia)[]

  • Government: Feudal Monarchy.
    • King: Wenceslaus IV (1378 – 1419), Sigismund (1419 - ???)
      • Dynasty: Von Luxembourg.
    • Laws
      • Building More Schools: As less people are in poverty with the more farms, we begin to focus on the other big problem in our country, our education system, which is very basic. We begin to slowly build more basic schools and teaching the children how to read and write in German, and focusing on getting more people literate before doing anything else.
      • Dealing with the Plague: While less of just trying to study the plague and find a cure, it's more of a counter measure of the plague spreading through our lands again from our expeditions outside of our land and small outbreaks still happening in the countryside but simply putting infected patients into separate health buildings where they are isolated from the rest of the country until the plague goes away, or they did.
  • Economy: Our economy is pretty weak and pretty trade reliant on livestock and farming but we are self sufficient without the need of imports. But without as many countries to trade with, we have to try even harder to seek new trade partners, such as Poland and even some people in the wastes, we start to set up trade posts on the edge of our borders hoping to attract trade from the wastes from the people still alive there as well as building a couple new ones in our expanded areas. Our major trade cities are Kattowitz, Breslau, and Prag.
  • Capital: Breslau (Wroclaw).
  • Demographics
    • Population: With a population with 271,533, most of it lives in cities after the plague ravaged most of the countryside. Some of the biggest cities include, Breslau, Prag (Prague), Ostrau (Ostrava), and Kattowitz (Katowice).
      • Poverty: Out of our 260,000 population about 85% of it is in poverty.
    • Religion: 75% Catholic, 22% Hussite, 3% Other.
  • Military: Our army is relatively small and basically a milita where we call upon them only when a conflict or unrest happens, about 5,000 troops strong at the moment.
    • Wars and Conflicts: None this turn.
  • Diplomacy
  • Events
BohemianExpansion

Bohemia expanding

  • Expansion into old Bohemian Lands: After the falling "health" acts, we feel confident into expanding into some old land for the king, starting east from Prague, we march into land here, and claim the land along with building new healthcare places, trading posts, and dealing with people who oppose us expanding there.
    • Continuation of The Hussite Religion: The Hussite continues to spread through our land far and wide, gaining more traction then ever before as many new people start following the faith.

  • Diplomacy:
    • Mamluk: OK whatever but we'll only have non-aggression pact.
  • Events:
    • Descendent of Timur himself: The descendent of Tamerlane (or Timur) emerges in a political background in 1400. His father died in 1405 and he was born on 1375, older than his eldest child, Miran (coincidence if you see VoidViper? I think not) and he also took upon his father's name as well. He rose to political ranks of the khanate and become one of the closest advisors of the Ilkhanate leader (which I won't disclose his actual name). However Tamerlane decided to secretly gain his own ranking benefits by massing up soldiers across the years as he grew closer to the leader. His plan was to establish a long-lasting legacy of his father's position as a general of the Ilkhanate.
    • Overthrow of the Ilkhanate: On 1413, Tamerlane II (or Timur II) emerged as a pretender to the throne. Unsatisfied of the leader's intention of ignoring the Mamluks, Tamerlane decided the best opportunity was to overthrow the khan himself and installing himself as the new ruler. By the end of 1419, the plan was all well and done. He installed himself as the ruler of the Ilkhanate and pulled out any remaining forces still loyal to the previous leader near the Mamluk territory.

  • Events/Operations:
    • Operation Kallestad: We send 400 spearmen, 100 swordman, 300 bowmen, 10 firestarters and 20 cavalry to expand into the mainland of Scandinavia, to discover any good lands for agriculture or hunting. This is expected to take a shorter amount of time than Operation Ausphaug.

    • Operation Ausphaug (Paused): We send 500 spearmen, 300 swordsman, 400 bowmen, 20 firestarters and 30 cavalry to discover more of the southern coast for areas more suitable for agriculture fishing. We also send 20 small transport ships, 10 normal transport ships and 5 large transport ships to search areas near present day Oslo. The Welsh Republic []

  • Government: Republic
    • Ruler: Leader Alwyn Davies
    • Act 2:1 - Mobilisation Act: Wars ravage around us. All the nations in England are at war or were at war. This worries us as we barely have an army. Therefore, as per this act, we are to mobilise an army at a fast rate. Therefore, multiple army bases are built scattered around the nation. We enlist and train volounteers, which are encouraged by the considerable pay, the free housing and food, as well as the pride and patriotism for the country.
    • Act 2:2 - Ship Building Act: Our Navy Consists of four small sloop ships. Its time to change that. We create jobs in South Wales and give the people integrated into our nation as per the Reunion jobs in the Shipbuilding sector. Firstly, a small port is built in South Wales, while the Ship Builders work on ships in the more developed North Wales. Then, Builders build more Docks in South Wales and the Ship Builders are spread between these docks in an efficient manner. After a number of Docks are made, they are then expanded to build bigger ships, such as Galleys, Longships and Larger Transport Ships.
    • Act 2:3 - Development of Military Research Act: Our Military lacks Quantity, so we have to make up in Quality. Therefore, we establish a Military Scholarship Base in the Midlands of Wales, where there is lots of space to test weapons and it is isolated and defended. Thanks to Act 1:2, a number of people are now qualified to join the Base. (Research done by this Academy will from now on be displayed on a separate Heading)
    • Act 2:4 - Assisted Self Development Act: After the Reunion Act, we have gained a lot of comparatively less developed lands. One of our big goals is to achieve homogenuous development throughout the nation. This, however, can be an issue, since we can't spare much gold or resources. Therefore, we encourage self development, where the small settlements of people are encouraged to harvest resources and build buildings themselves. However, this is assisted by the government, where the government provides tools and a small number of animals to as many settlemets they can reach. This is supplied by wagons, defended by a troop of cavalry each. 15 Wagons roamed South Wales, refilling in the closest cities. Over these 10 years, it is estimated that 69% of all settlements are met, while about 92% of the sizeable settlements are met. Food is provided to people that are malnourished in cities and other people are given farmable land and are told to develop them, farm in them, and develop housing. If they are not used correctly, the people are removed from the land, and given to others. Other lands are overseen by the government directly while homeless or poorer people are given jobs on them. These lands are used for farming and the homeless people are given housing, some food and a small pay in return.
  • Economy:
    • Our Economy is expanding in the agriculture field, as per our new revolutionary land using systems. At the same time, Iron is discovered in small traces in South West Wales as of now. Due to the lack of development, we are only extracting a small amount. We are also expanding our logging industry and our fishing industry (thanks to Act 2:2 making boats more widespread). Our economy is also booming thanks the trade with Scotland and Leinster.

    • Cities:
      • Bangor: 9,812 people
      • Colwyn Bay: 6,831 people
      • Aberystwyth: 6,193 people

      • Wrexham: 3,941 people
      • Machynlleth: 3,109 people
    • Religion: Catholic Christian (78%), Celtic Christian (16%), Other (6%)
  • Operations and Expansions:
    • Gloucester Integration Aftermath: While our military and people were able to enter Gloucestershire perfectly well, building long term settlements was not anywhere as easy. Our mistake came because we didn't develop the land routes to the region so our supplies couldn't reach the fledgling settlements and other than crops which take a long time, and animals, that were limited, the settlements were starved. With news of the death of colonists coming to the mainland, all people were pulled out to reduce death. What remained was a few, half built settlements and abandoned farms, farms that shouldn't die anytime soon because of the rain. The Military Base is also abandoned with some equipment left behind.
    • Return to Gloucestershire: Our first failure could be attributed to our lack of transport link as far as we can tell. Having learnt from our mistake, and taking into consideration Act 2:2, this time we expand in Gloucestershire across the sea, where we build settlements close to the sea where smaller ships can act as fishing vessels to provide food locally instead of having to rely on the mainland fully while the crops grow and animals breed. At the same time, using our Southern Docks, we also ship resources to these settlements. This is all while a group of workers, supplied with food and accompanied by a Platoon of Swordsmen and Archers, try to establish Road connections between the Settlements and the Mainland. At the same time, A troop of cavalry escort a wagon to retract the equipment left in the army base.
    • Glouchestershire Plans: The settlements are to be built by civilians brought to the land using Cogs and Galleys, each group coming with enough food to support them for at least a week. With the ships that carried people, other Cogs are to come bearing enough wood and stone to build buildings. The first building to be built, apart from small housing for the workers, is a sort of Dock to house cogs which are to be used for fishing. Cogs and sloops with food are to come to the settlement every 2 days. The Dock is also to be used to make disembarking goods easier than before. This trend of shipping good continues until the Dock is built in one settlement. Then, ships are to visit the settlement daily with goods, to expand it and to build settlements branching out of the first one. People are to be added to the settlement, people who are aiming to start their own society. The insertion of resources is to continue, until the settlement has achieved self-reliance, at which point, there will be trade between them and the mainland. 4 sloops are ready to send in resources into the Settlements if things go sour.

Turn 3 (1420-1430 AD)[]

Tlemceni-Tunis war: The Tlemceni sultanate begins an invasion of the rest of Tunis, but are met by a Tunisian army at Filfila, half a day's march from the Oued Zeramna river, the 4 000 strong first wave is sent running back to Skikda with 2 340 dead by the 5 450 strong defending army. A second wave 6 750 strong is sent with ships assisting the assault, and the Tunisian defense is broken but with massive losses. The Tlemceni army quickly advances to Lac Fetzara, establishing a new front and sending small pillaging parties to the east to take food and riches from the local villages. The Tunisians send 3 400 soldiers to break the new line in 1412, and succeed in weakening the line, but are forced to retreat. Both sides agree to a truce with thousands dead.

Tlemceni: They continue expanding in Iberia, claiming land north until Torrevieja and send an expedition to Murcia to seek for riches of the Castilian kingdom

Tunis: The colonization effort is further publicized, allowing more who wish to go to the frontier as long as they agree to pay taxes and be subject to colonial laws and occupation. A new colony is made in Sardinia where the cities of Cagliari, Carbonia, Villacidro and Arborea are claimed and resettled. Several thousands of people travel to Sicily, settling in the already claimed land. The Tunisian military slowly prepares for a war against Tlemceni for reclamation of lost lands. They arrange a secret defensive pact with Morocco

Morocco: They expand westward in Iberia up till Faro and eastward to Granada, keeping a distance from the conflict in the east, but after the efforts made by the Tunisians they arranged a secret defensive pact

Georgia: Their final defenses break under the massive numbers of the Horde, over 40 000 Georgians(including civilians) died in the battles, but they were able to kill 15 000 invaders.

Osman Expedition: The expedition in Anatolia mysteriously goes missing, with no signs of success or failure reaching their way back to the Osman lands. What could've happened to them?

York, Lancaster, Ulster(To Wales): The creation of trade between us would be favourable, perhaps we should establish a merchant guild that spanned all our nations?

Munster(To Wales): No thanks, the trade ships would be pillaged by the Leinster navy and criminals

Cumbria: They begin fortification of their newly claimed lands and enhance infrastructure.

Królestwo Polskie (Kingdom of Poland, Regnum Poloniae)[]

  • Government: Hereditary Monarchy
    • King: Władysław II Jagiełło
    • Pope: Władysław I (until 1428), Władysław II (since 1428)
    • New Laws: New Tax system: Polish-origin Noblemans should pay 5% their income to Kingdom's treasury, 5% for Catholic Church and 1% for peasants to reduce their poverty.

  • Events:
    • Północ's mission: Group Północ asked Pope Władysław I to send some priests to newly-expanded region and establish Pomeranian Diocese. At the same time Północ and scouts returned their expansion to areas around Szczecin. However, some men died due to aggresive wolves in dark Pomeranian forests.
    • Failed attempt in Carpathians: Południe's mission was less succesful and they only met native people but they refused to join us due to them being more similar with Czechs than Poles culturally. In 1428 the King declined Południe's mission due to Pope's influence to do not get affected by Black Death again. Południe left Slovak lands until 1429 Autumn leaving a mission for them to resettle to south from their own lands.
